As a German- American who came to the United States in 1951 having grown up in Germany some 200 meters from the border (fortunately on the western side near Luebeck), I really look forward to celebrating Unity Day again on October 3rd. Since coming to the USA, I returned to Germany on a regular basis starting 1959, but the most memorable visit occurred in 1985 when I traveled by car from Hamburg to Berlin. The contrast between the West and East Germany left a lasting impression on me. It felt like going back to what I saw and experienced after the war. The reunification couldn’t have happened without the policies of President Ronald Reagan and the support of President George Bush and the wise leadership of Chancellor Helmut Kohl. Let’s remember them on this very special day!!!
