The German-American Friendship Garden

Dear Readers,

If you have ever walked along Constitution Avenue between the White House and the Washington Monument, you may have been one of the seven million people to walk past a garden filled with flowers and plants native to both the US and Germany. This is the German-American Friendship Garden – a monument that symbolizes the long-standing relationship between the US and Germany.

This garden is near and dear to our hearts. It was commissioned to commemorate the 300th anniversary of German immigration to America and jointly dedicated  by President Ronald Reagan and Chancellor Helmut Kohl on November 15, 1988.

“In a few months, I'll be leaving the White House,” Regan said in his speech. “But the garden, and all it represents, will remain, to be nurtured and sustained by the friendship between Germans and Americans.”

Therefore, in 2013, the German Embassy, the National Park Service, the Trust for the National Mall, the Association of German-America Societies and the German-American Heritage Foundation signed a Memorandum of Understanding committing to preserving the beauty of this Garden.

The garden was first restored in 2013. In 2019 perennial beds, plants and flowers were planted and revitalized.

So next time you're in Washington, D.C., be sure to look for it at the halfway point between the White House and the Washington Monument.
