Welcome to the new year! As German Chancellor Scholz said in his New Year’s address, a difficult year has come to an end. But as a result of Russia’s war of aggression in Ukraine, the EU and NATO are more united than they have been for a long time. 2022 is characterized by cohesion, strength and optimism, Scholz said.
As the year began, Germany passed the G7 Presidency to Japan. Meanwhile, Sweden took the Presidency of the European Council and plans to continue building a strong and capable European Union. Germany will be leading NATO’s Very High Readiness Joint Task Force in 2023, “as we continue to prioritize our unshaking commitment to NATO” Ambassador Haber tweeted.
This year, Germany will continue to support Ukraine while also continuing to push for definitive action on climate. Germany also ended its dependence on Russian energy and received its first standard shipment of liquefied national gas to one of its new terminals in the North Sea this week.
“Let’s continue with courage and confidence along the path we have set out on,” Scholz said. “May this year be a good one for you all!”
